Limited benefit medical plan is important because health insurance expenses may be one of the fastest-growing cost components for employers. Therefore, as much as they would like to, employers may find it impossible to offer their employees health insurance and still manage their business costs.

A limited benefit medical plan is a lower-cost alternative to major medical insurance. However, where traditional health insurance provides protection against preventative, regular and major or catastrophic medical events, limited benefit medical plans cover only certain routine medical expenses such as doctor's office visits, diagnostic tests and hospital confinement.
